Baruch Blumberg who helped NASA begin its search for alien life in the 1970s has died aged 85.
Nobel Prize winner Blumberg was credited with saving millions of lives due to his help developing a Hepatitis B virus vaccine. He died of a heart attack last Tuesday while attending a NASA workshop in California. "The world has lost a great man," said former NASA administrator Daniel Goldin.
A man of many interests and talents, he spent his 70s helping NASA begin its search for extraterrestrial life and the study of the origins of life on Earth as director of NASA's Astrobiology Institute at Moffett Field from 1999 to 2002.
