Archaeologists are set to determine the age of the oldest earthen mound in Ohio.
Using remote radar sensing of the earthwork as well as core samples from various points around the mound, archaeologists hope to definitively determine the age of the mound as well as who created it.
The Ohio Historical Society has approved an application to conduct an archaeological investigation of Serpent Mound State Memorial, near Peebles, by William F. Romain, Ph. D. , a research associate with The Ohio State University Newark Earthworks Center. The work began April 9, and will continue in phases over the next several months.

I think it was Native Americans of the pre archaic era most likely preceeding the Delaware or Iroquios.

In addition, contemporary American Indians have an interest in the site. Several attributions have been entered by academic, philosophic, and Native American concerns regarding all three of these unknown factors of when designed, when built, and by whom. Ov... [More]

I just posted about this here: Profiling The Unexplained: Serpent Mound This is what I posted: I visited the Serpent Mound when I was a kid, but I haven't returned, even though it's only about an hour drive from where I live. I should go back sometime, but it's the kind of place where once is enough, let the next person have their chance, and don't let it get trashed by tourists. We're taught about Christopher Columbus in school, and how people used to believe the world was flat before he discovered America. I don't agree with that, however. If you look at a bird's-eye-view of the Serpent Moun... [More]
