Crowds have turned up in Switzerland to witness the infamous "corpse flower" blooming for the first time.
One of the plant's most distinctive features is its strong smell of rotting flesh, a feature aimed at attracting flies. It is the first time this particular 17-year-old plant has bloomed and the flower will only last a few days before wilting.
A rare plant that has the distinct smell of rotting flesh is attracting large crowds in Switzerland. Thousands of plant lovers are flocking to the Basel Botanical Garden in Switzerland to see a full bloom of a corpse flower. The 17-year-old plant is blooming for the first time.

I saw one once, it wasn't quite blooming yet and didn't have the extreme smell they are talking about but it was an awesome sight to see a flower that huge!! It was set to bloom the next day, I'm glad we went early.

So it's basically a doomed plant? Sounds too inconvenient to successfully bloom, yet wilt in a matter of days.

They leaf is really cool, 8 to15' tall deeply divided with a mottled green stalk (and it doesn't smell!). They are not uncommon in cultivation (most botanic gardens of any size have at least one), and they are now in tissue culture, but it takes time and a lot of room to grow and flower one. The tuber can get up to at least 100 lbs. and probably a lot more. BTW the plant in the video is Amorphophallus titanum, while the plant shown on the Unexplained Mysteries site ... [More]

But the plant will then grow an enormous leaf, then when that dies, either another leaf or perhaps another flower will follow. The single giant leaf looks like a small tropical tree and can last for a couple of years before it dies to ground, and each leaf gets larger!
