The double-barrel of an old pistol has been discovered at a New Zealand tunnel dig site.
The double-barrel and other metal components of a pistol have been discovered at the bottom of a well at the dig site for the Victoria Park Tunnel in Auckland, NZ. There are many reasons that people would've had guns during the country's colonial period but the fact that it was found at the bottom of a well points more toward sinister reasons. Could this be the discarded evidence of a long forgotten crime ?
Mystery surrounds the discovery of an ancient gun during digging for the Victoria Park Tunnel. The double-barrelled pistol was found at the bottom of a well near Napier St at the southern end of the tunnel project. Archaeologist Sarah Phear says a team member made the discovery. "There have been different artefacts found in different layers of material. The pistol was found right at the very bottom. There were layers of soil and rubbish on top of it. "

Bit of a leap to say it was hidden, imo. Could have been dropped or thrown in well and just left because it was a duffer.

Exciting for the team who discovered it... and probably that is where it will end.

In the 1800's guns were not standardized the way they are now. There were odd shapes, makes and calibers. It would be easy to find a murderer if the nature of the killing could only have been perpetrated by a certain caliber of weapon; a large bore weapon like a .50 (12.7mm) or .60 (15.24) caliber pistol would be easy to find when the average bullet size was around 9 to 10 mm. Seems like a good reason to throw away the gun to me... just saying.

Need to call in the expert from "Pawn Stars", Sean Rich, to evaluate and give its worth. "Ran out of coins, still needed to make a wish". Rob Awesome. Very funny!!!

Hi, Maybe the owner of the gun got drunk one night and committed a terrible crime. When he woke up sober (ish) the next day he was so reviled by his crime that he had to get rid of the gun so that he could never commit such an act again.

I was thinking along the same lines. Heck, today's criminals dispose their weapons in a similar fashion. Yea, me too...
