The US has put into action a plan to combat white-nose syndrome before it wipes out all bats.
The death toll so far has reached the million mark and within 20 years many species of bats could be completely wiped out. Scientists meeting in Arkansas have organized a plan to deal with this disease before its too late.
US experts have published an action plan that aims to halt the spread of white-nose syndrome (WNS), which has killed more than a million bats. The document offers guidance on a range of issues, including how to identify the disease and improving bio-security. WNS has spread rapidly since it was first found in 2006, and now affects 18 states and four Canadian provinces.

I like bats, I hope they find a cure...

Another devastating symptom of a very ill ecology. And interestingly the narrow minded only care about what it will cost agriculture. I think the ramifications go far deeper than money.

Good heaven this is awful. Yeah, bats are awesome for a lot of reasons, and not just the farming industry. Another possible oh crap impact on humans- West Nile, Malaria, and other mosquito related problems. Bats eat a ton of mosquitos like birds do. Mostly birds take the day, bats take the night on eating duty. So there could be a significant increase in uneaten mosquitos. In a flood year like this year, that could end up getting pretty nasty. I'm not good on harming any species, but bats are for sure on the friendly we need them list.

Oh yes kill of a species so you can "cure" a disease! How cruel! I hope these Scientists come back as bats. You don't exterminate a species just so you can save them, how barbaric. Let's hope that they try to do it at night, you know when the bats are out hunting?

They are trying to monitor the situation and prevent dying. They are sorely afraid white nose will wipe out species and want to stop it from happening. If you got the impression of purposeful harm from my comment, I'm sorry you mistook my comment.

Let's hope that they try to do it at night, you know when the bats are out hunting? What else could they do? Capture each bat that carries the disease and inject them with some antidote we might not even have a cure for?

On any given night in the spring to fall season I can sit on my deck at dusk and see countless bats. Literally thousands. No shortage where I live!

For now torf, for now... at the accelerating rate of this disease, give it enough time you will have just silent, empty dusk sky to admire, less the bats sadly
