Man eating river monsters of Japan

An exhibition in Japan explores the country's history with dangerous unidentified animals.
Stories of creatures powerful enough to kill humans - even a dozen well-armed samurai - have been a part of Japanese folklore and culture for over a hundred years. The new exhibition explores this history and raises questions about what these creatures really were.
Stories of man eating creatures inhabiting the waterways of Japan have been around since the time of the samurai. At an exhibition at the Kawasaki City Museum entitled “Japan’s Mythical Creatures- Accounts of Unidentified Organisms,” there was a curious old account from 1834 concerning a strange and terrifying animal lurking in a marshland near Tokyo, Japan.

I read the headline wrong. I thought it sounded like a man was eating all the river monsters in Japan. OK, that made me laugh. I thought there were loads of animals in rivers that ate people anyway.

Those samurai didn't notice that the river was deep, they drowned and to protect their pride, they made stories like this.

I think the thing that lets the legend down the most is that it claims the monster killed 12 Samurai. I mean come on? 12 Samurai were bested by a river creature? That thing would have to be ridiculously strong.

Why would samurai be digging a ditch? I have to agree with Rafterman. Just reading that the Samurai were digging a ditch made me think this is just a story. It is kind of surprising that the story does not go on to have a Japanese popular hero show up and kill the monster in one blow, or maybe after a 10 day battle.
