Did Marco Polo really go to China ?

Archeologists believe famed explorer Marco Polo may have never actually travelled to China at all.
Famed for his travels around the world in the 13th century, Polo may have pieced together scraps of information about China for his book "A Description of the World" rather than having actually travelled there.
They think it more likely that the Venetian merchant adventurer picked up second-hand stories of China, Japan and the Mongol Empire from Persian merchants whom he met on the shores of the Black Sea – thousands of miles short of the Orient.

I suspect Persian words were used... 1) Because it was an intermediate language. Likely the Khan had people who spoke Persian, but none that spoke any European languages. 2) Because the afore mentioned Persian merchants were probably available as interpretors and thus used their own words and not Mongol words. Explained simply.

It is possible that Marco went in china to Kublai. Remember they were merchants, and merchants are notorious for travelling. Beside that, 'Il Millione' was not written by Marco Polo, but messer Rustichello, and by his own admission he changed some parts. There were also Persians and Persian speaking people, in Kublai court, if Im not mistaken one of his ministers was Persian. Finally Marco moved along Mongols, not chinesees so that's why he didnt describe so much chinesee culture, but Mongolian. And the great wall, became as we know today later in time. But uintil no psisical clues are found i... [More]

China is a big place, Marco would have just visited a very small part and had access to very little. The Mongols were more open than the Han regarding all things culture, tradition and knowledge due to the vast differences then. Many look at the western documents about China and thinks it all fits in a nutshell. China believes Marco did arrived in China but did not see the whole of China. That though is befitting of fitting it all in a nutshell.

Ghengis Khan himself a red haired, pale skinned westerner, his sons if looked a bit asian just because he had sex with so many women. A persian historian Rachid Al-Din, also an officially appointed chronicler for the Mongol empire under Kublai Khans rule, described Ghengis Khan as a red haired, blue eyed man. And the lore of Ghengis Khan includes a legendary figure with similiar features appearing in Mongolia. The Mongol empire was founded by western asian nomadic tribes when they colonized the territory of Altaian regions, and they forced siberian tribes to assimilate, the siberians elements ... [More]
