A living fossil has been discovered in the form of a Pacific eel with unusually primitive features.
The new eel has been named "Protoanguilla palau" after the caves it was found in and appears to have an independent evolutionary history stretching back over 200 million years. In order to classify it researchers had to come up with a whole new family, genus and species.
A newly discovered eel that inhabits an undersea cave in the Pacific Ocean has been dubbed a "living fossil" because of its primitive features. It is so distinct, scientists created a new taxonomic family to describe its relationship to other eels.
