A controversial new ban on praying in the streets is to be strictly enforced in France's capital.
The new law may also be extended to apply to the whole country in an effort to keep public spaces secular. The ban applies to all religions and failure to comply will be met with force the interior minister has warned.
Claude Guéant said that ban could later be extended to the rest of France, in particular to the Mediterranean cities of Nice and Marseilles, where "the problem persists". He promised the new legislation would be followed to the letter as it "hurts the sensitivities of many of our fellow citizens".
