NASA is offering to fund a private company who can provide manned trips to and from the space station.
Not content with relying on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft to transport astronauts to the International Space Station, NASA is looking to fund two or three space vehicles proposed by private companies in an ongoing effort to hand crew transportation services over to commercial providers. "Every year we do not have a commercial crew capability, the station is at risk," said commercial spaceflight development director Phil McAlister.
NASA hopes some U. S. companies will soon be giving the Russians a run for their money to fly astronauts to the International Space Station.
