Crocodile turns orange

An Australian crocodile puzzled keepers this month when it unexpectedly turned orange.
Keeper Tracy Sandstrom who runs a mobile reptile display feared for the creature's health when she first noticed the colour change. It turned out that it had been chewing on pipes that filtered the water it slept in at night, as a result red algae and tannins had found their way in - slowly but surely turning him a strange orange colour. "It's a collector's item now. Everyone will want one. I should have put him on eBay," said Sandstrom.
The eight foot crocodile saltwater began to turn an interesting shade orange, causing his keeper Tracy Sandstrom, who runs a mobile reptile display called Roaming Reptiles, to fear for his health.

He's simply getting in the spirit for Halloween!! His 'keeper' says he's "still a nasty crocodile" - I don't think I would have a sunny disposition either if I were kept caged up.

I wish they were all that color. Maybe you'd see them before they kill you.

It's a good thing they noticed what was causing the color change before it did irreversable damage to the Croc. High levels of PH can cause extreme stress in fish if not detected and taken care of. It can also cause gill and eye damage as well as thickening of the skin and death. Changes in PH can also effect the toxcity of dissolved components. Also, lets hope they acclimated the croc back to where it is supposed to be without the PH present. Quick changes in PH can also cause fatal results, whether the PH is going up or down. Not sure if it works the same for crocs as it does for fish or not... [More]
