NASA considers the use of tractor-beams

NASA is funding a program that will study the usefulness of tractor-beams in future missions.
"Beam me up Scotty" may soon be more than just words from an iconic television program, albeit on a smaller scale. Scientists are hoping to develop the means with which to "beam" particles up from the surface of other planets using lasers.
US space agency Nasa has funded a study of "tractor beams" to gather samples for analysis in future missions. The $100,000 (£63,000) award will be used to examine three laser-based approaches to do what has until now been the stuff of science fiction.

Wow. I am learning a bit about lasers! Here is a great site on harvard ironically. http://www.uos.harvard.edu/ehs/radiation/hazard_classification.shtml They give laser classfication, also based off of its harmfulness along with places you can call that protects against laser radation ect. I found it insteresting it said Class 4 laser can cause harmful/toxic airborne issues and high voltage. So....they can be used as biological weapons, similiar to or assoc. with anthrax..as it's an airborne weapon. Another link gives examples of Class Lasers. http://ehs.uky.edu/radiation/laser_fs.html "Class I... [More]

Sound can also be used as a weapon and it can also be used to break up kidney stones. Like I said anything can be a weapon. Oxygen is also a poison and can be used as a weapon. How could this particle collector be used as a weapon. I`m sure it could be but for what.

I wouldn't worry about this too much, puridalan. Lasers are cool, but they are easy to block. Light can't penetrate your skin, so using lasers to affect your brain is tricky. Other than aiming directly at your optic nerve, I'm not sure how lasers could control how you think, or cause diseases other than eye damage or skin cancer (from a UV laser). Of course a high powered laser could definitely burn right through you, but it is much easier and cheaper to use bullets. Large gas and solid state lasers are used in cutting and welding (see the wiki), and so they could be used to kill people, but i... [More]

Thank you for your informative post. One thing I would disagree with is how you stated anthrax is powerful. Yes it did come from animal especially like sheep, in sheep shearing how osme of it came into contact. But I have taken microbio and read many books on antrhax. And will state that antrhax before human intervention was actually going on a decline. It was naturally becoming weak, and while it did kill people in that form it was never anything like the plague ect. Anthrax evolved lethally and as a weapon when human intervention/manipulation in the powder form occured. Getting anthrax itsel... [More]

NASA cant get to the next planet on a decent time frame. Nasa should be focused on propulsion to make planetary man travel viable.

Sep Thank you very much for that info now Im going to build my own laser..haha just kidding..maybe Copa No offense but there is evidence that it was...on the decline, and not so much that it was dissepearing..thats not what I meant, that it was becoming weaker and less harmful to humans. I will give you the book if I need to go dig it up! I said the spores were weaponize and had to be put into a powder form if you read what I wrote..they just dont magically turn to powder. Finally I know how anthrax manifest.. I read over seven books on the subject, not trying to be rude and wrote a few papers... [More]

And, in the meantime, NASA is still playing with laser based tractor beams. This is ubercool - or I think it is - although I suspect it's going to be a while before it's to the point of being practical for planetary exploration, or at least the bringing stuff home to examine part. So now it's orbital fuel depots, orbital recycling robots and tractor beams. What will they come up with next? Edit: That's NASA, DARPA and NASA respectively before anyone claims I was too ambiguous about the "they".
