A fourth escape tunnel built by prisoners of the PoW camp Stalag Luft III has been discovered in poland.
The daring escape attempt by imprionsed RAF officers during World War II was immortalised in the 1963 film "The Great Escape". Three tunnels were initially dug in secret, over one-hundred men attempted to escape to freedom through the tunnels but most were either caught or executed with only three managing to get away. But now archaeologists have unearthed a fourth tunnel, it appears that despite seeing their friends and allies executed for their previous escape attempt the remaining officers had not been willing to give up in their bid for freedom.
It has lain hidden for nearly 70 years and looks, to the untrained eye, like a building site. But this insignificant tunnel opening in the soft sand of western Poland represents one of the greatest examples of British wartime heroism.
