PETA demands highway memorials for cows

The animal rights group believes cattle killed on the roads should have memorials built for them.
PETA ( People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals ) has asked for permission to purchase memorial markers to place on highways at places where cattle trucks have been involved in an accident resulting in the deaths of the cows on board. "Sparing them from being tossed from a speeding truck and deprived of care afterward, sometimes for several hours, seems the least we can do," said Tracy Patton.
The animal rights group known for risque anti-fur campaigns and 'Meat is Murder' slogan, is going one step further to give dead cows a memorial reserved for human victims.

Over hunting simply means over hunting, predator or not. There's no "Prey animal clause" in the definition. Also, the world wouldn't up and say "Okay, guys, no more meat". Clearly it would be a gradual change, decreasing demand in livestock. As more and more people stop eating meat, less demand would be to breed said animals. There wouldn't be a mass amount of cows released into the wild. It's funny you mention 7 billion people, as a huge proportion of the world doesn't eat meat on a daily basis. Livestock takes a huge amount of land and energy, so meat with every meal is a first world luxury.... [More]

Well as far as PETA campaigns go, you have to admit that this one is fairly mild. Especially if they're paying with their own funds. But let's be realistic. Paid monuments? Why not just make an annual pilgrimage to the site of the accident with flowers and a picture of a cow (maybe even erect a temporary cross at the accident site - cows can be Christians). Heck, they might even get themselves in the local paper annually for doing that. It'd be much cheaper too.

We have the RSPCA in Australia also. I thought PETA was like an uber fundamentalist animal rights activist group more like Greenpeace than an animal protection group.

It was once an animal protection group. Now it's a 'turn everyone vegan' group.

I am an active animal rights activist myself, but I have to say that PETA really disgust me. Instead of wasting that money on cow memorials they should be putting it towards something that is actually beneficial to animals, like putting a stop to factory farming or dog fighting. It's a disgusting waste of money that could otherwise be put to good use in the fight to stop animal cruelty. How is building a memorial for a cow going to help the animal? It may make people aware that cows have been hit by trucks, but that isn't going to stop it from happening again. I can't believe that they are goi... [More]
