New data from the Opportunity rover suggests that life forms may have once lived within rocks on mars.
It might seem like a dry, cold and barren wasteland today but an increasing body of evidence points towards Mars once being a much more hospitable place. NASA's Opportunity rover has been trundling around on the surface of the planet for years and has now uncovered rock fractures which could have once been a refuge for life.
"There are plenty of places on Earth where organisms live in places where water is flowing through fractures in rock," said lead scientist Steve Squyres. "That's definitely a possibility at this location."
In August 2011, Opportunity completed a three-year journey to Endeavour, a 14 mile (22 kilometer) crater formed in the early history of the planet. The Rover studied various kinds of rocks.
