Suborbital space trips could generate as much as $1.6 billion within the first decade of operations.
Space tourism accounts for 80% of demand for suborbital space flights and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic is set to be the first of several companies vying for a share in the fledgling sector. With over 536 potential passengers providing a collective deposit of $70 million in advance of the company's planned 2014 launch date, interest in space tourism is at an all-time high.

"Our analysis indicates that about 8,000 high-net-worth individuals from across the globe are sufficiently interested and have spending patterns likely to result in the purchase of a suborbital flight - one-third from the United States," said a recent report.
Commercial suborbital space flights should bring in between $600 million and $1. 6 billion in revenue in their first decade of operations, according to a study commissioned by the US.

I wonder if that $1.6B is profit or just money gained without taking fuel and other expenses into account.

I think that's without expenses, seeing as 8,000 people each paying $200,000 adds up to $1.6B...
