The end of the world hasn't happened... yet

Ever since it was revealed that the Mayan calendar appeared to end on December 21st 2012, doom sayers have been promoting the idea that this represented not just the end of the calendar but also the end of the world - that the Mayans had predicted the end of days. And here we are, finally, on the day itself, and so far nothing out of the ordinary appears to have happened.

Things have been pretty hectic in run up to the 21st. Some people have taken to building special shelters to help them weather the apocalypse while others have attempted to reach alleged safe havens such as the French mountain of Pic de Bugarach. NASA has been attempting to emphasize that there is no reason to believe that the world will end on this date and even the modern Mayan people have rejected the idea that the end of their ancient calendar signifies anything other than the end of one cycle and the beginning of another.

So is it at all likely that the world is going to end today ?
