Congressman Tim Moore recently posted a video showing a secret staircase leading down into a hidden tunnel.
There are secrets hidden beneath the floor of the US Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., as demonstrated this week in a viral video posted to Twitter/X by Congressman Tim Moore.
In the clip, Moore can be seen lifting a section of the floor in the Lincoln Room to reveal a hidden tunnel and a spiral staircase descending deep into the gloom.
"You can see there's a passageway," he said.
It turns out that this secret staircase leads down to a hidden chamber and even outside the building.
According to Moore, it was one of the staircases used by British soldiers to breach the Capitol in 1814 during a siege that became known as the Burning of Washington.
It would later take 15 years to fully repair the building, and this hidden staircase is thought to be one of the few remaining parts of the original structure still standing to this day.
"These were old stairs that used to be here but were closed off," said Moore.
"Believe it or not, my big self has actually gotten down - and more importantly, out - of this hole."
