Sonny Cater found more than be bargained for when he took his metal detector to a field near his home.
Using nothing more than a £30 National Geographic metal detector he'd received as a Christmas present, Sonny had been exploring fields near to where he lived when the device started to beep. Digging in the ground he uncovered a mud-caked metal capsule which he took back home and washed to see what it was. His parents soon became suspicious however when the initially innocuous device revealed itself to be disconcertingly bomb-shaped.
Shortly afterwards the police and a bomb disposal unit has been called to the house, it turned out that what Sonny had discovered was an old World War II practice bomb. "We are dumbfounded that he discovered this on his first go," said his mother. "It was caked in mud and Jem just thought it was a lump of metal and took it home." Fortunately it was determined that the device did not pose a risk and it was later disposed of safely by the authorities.[!gad]Using nothing more than a £30 National Geographic metal detector he'd received as a Christmas present, Sonny had been exploring fields near to where he lived when the device started to beep. Sonny was enjoying a walk across Roydon Common for around 15 minutes with his parents and brother Marley, nine, on Boxing Day when his metal detector started beeping. He dug up the treasure but couldn't make out what it was – so he hurriedly bundled up the muddy object and took it home to wash down.
