A huge underwater bug kept at the Toba Aquarium in Japan has been on a hunger strike for four years.
Images of giant isopods have circulated the Internet for years and a lot of the time these have been dismissed as clever fakes. In truth however, the giant isopod is a very real creature indeed and lives 100m under the surface of the ocean where it scavenges for food. While the isopods can go for quite some time without eating anything, the specimen kept at the Toba Aquarium has been taking this to the extreme.
Keeper Takaya Moritaki has been attempting to get the creature to eat for four years without success and cannot explain what the problem is. "I just want it to eat something somehow," he says. "It's weakened in this state." In a recent videotaped effort, Mr. Moritaki was seen giving the isopod some fish to eat but all it seemed to do was nibble at it before walking away.[!gad]Images of giant isopods have circulated the Internet for years and a lot of the time these have been dismissed as clever fakes. The giant isopod lives far away from our ball-point pens, over 100 meters under the sea. They are scavengers who have adapted to going for long periods of time without food. However, when an ample food source is present, they can ravenous appetites sometimes even biting through underwater cables.
http://en.rocketnews...ng-such-a-jerk/ A giant isopod at the Toba aquarium in Mie prefecture , Japan ,has been on a hunger strike for 4 years. No one knows why . The aquarium has played with temperature ,to coax it into eating . It rubs its face in food, but doesn't ingest any . It hasn't eaten since 2009 Staff is quite frustrated . Personally ,I think its protesting Abe in office .... ,or just AKB48 in general http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/A-War-You-Cannot-Win-lyrics-All-That-Remains/0727F472E68B0C8148257AB100049AA3
Obviously they aren't capable of getting his environment right, so release him before he starves to death. A good question would be, has he EVER eaten much since they initially captured him? If no, then the solution is obvious. But they do have more than one .It's just this one, that won't eat .
But they do have more than one .It's just this one, that won't eat . Maybe the little feller is grieving and that is why he won't eat? There are many reasons as to why he isn't eating, but if I was living in captivity in a strange environment and not used to it, I would grieve and just be too sad to eat. Or maybe he is lonely and wants a companion. Such a sad little story:/
someone contact the animal service agencies at japan by email poor animal.im going to to that by email I'm assuming this is a joke..... They do love their marine life, but ummm, they also slaughter it for no good reason . If animal agencies allow whaling and the dolphin slaughters in Taiji ,this is just one poor pill bug. No one will care.
