Villagers in the country's Kocaeli province were left baffled after a nearby bridge totally disappeared.
The 25m, 22-ton bridge provided a safe crossing over a creek that separated local homes from orchards on the other side, yet on Monday puzzled residents discovered that the entire thing had vanished in to thin air. Authorities soon determined that the bridge had been cut in to pieces and loaded on to the back of a truck by thieves who hoped to sell it as scrap metal.
Residents expressed their frustration and disbelief over the incident as police vowed to launch an investigation in an effort to catch those responsible. Local man Mustafa Karakas was particularly unhappy about the theft - "now we have to take our socks off and cross the creek," he said.
In a most unusual incident thieves on Monday stole an entire bridge, apparently for its scrap metal, in the western province of Kocaeli.
