Richard Dawkins proposes 'cosmic tombstone'

Should we create a 'cosmic tombstone' for our species ? Image Credit: NASA
The evolutionary biologist has suggested sending a record of our civilization out in to space.
While Dawkins' prediction of our inevitable demise seems somewhat pessimistic, the concept of preserving our knowledge and discoveries is certainly an intriguing one.

The proposition essentially involves compiling a definitive record of humanity's greatest creations and accomplishments and then sending this information out in to space to act as a posthumous monument to our species when we are no longer around.
The 'God Delusion' author put forward the idea during a discussion with physicist Professor Laurence Krauss at an event in London hosted by The Skeptic magazine.

"I sometimes think that even now actually we should be sending out what you could call a ‘cosmic tombstone' because eventually the human species is going to go extinct," he said.

"It would be nice to think that Shakespeare and Bach and Darwin and Einstein - the achievements of the great humans of history - would not die with us."

A good idea if humanity collectively solves the ills besetting the world if not and the situation only worsens maybe it is better if humanity is forgotten.

this spells 2 things for me, Incase there are aliens and they find it, Invasion will be easier, they don't even need to use weapons, they probably will use Religion since more than 70% of the world fixated on religion, thats one possibility and second possibility humans go extinct before anyone finds it and our legacy does not die. personally i would put it in the moons core a huge Quantum computer and maintance bots and upload everything the world has done and how they've done it, peoples names information and everything. as security measure we should add an A.I to manage the quantum computer

Dawkins is a fatalist and a numbskull. the monument that will be sent into Space is ourselves. We will be fleeing this solar system far sooner than a mathematically probable time for our planet's demise. Most likely in a simulation. It's likely that humanity will exist in a simulation in order to survive, if we aren't already in a simulation.

A tombstone? Why bother? What do I care what's on my tombstone if there's nobody around to read it? What are the hurdles that life must clear in order to travel in space? 1. Just being alive. How hard is it for a planet to evolve living things? So far, we don't have any credible evidence of alien life. 2. Living in colonies/organisms. Space-faring civilizations are going to be multi-cellular. So how difficult is it for single-celled organisms to evolve into multi-celled ones? 3. Acquiring intelligence. This requires not just a mind, but the ability to manipulate tools. How difficult is it to d... [More]

Really we've only been detectable here on Earth for a blink in the timeline of the universe. That someone visited Earth, and only did so during the scientific age, and/or left clear evidence behind is quite unlikely, IMHO. And our spotting other worlds with civilization is also pretty small IMHO, since what we are looking for (communication radiation) might have been used for even a smaller blink in history. We used telegraph, then telephone, then satellites, and who knows what in the future. So the possibility of finding another civilization by looking for radio effects is almost certainly a ... [More]

Meh, unnecessary pessimism and a waste of time. So many factors would have to be aligned for aliens to get anything useful out of our tombstone beyond an irrational human need to be remembered. Much as I like Dawkins, I think this is about as likely to be maeningful as him walking into church and offering a prayer. It might however be useful to put a 'tombstone' on the moon, or maybe put several in places they won't be easily destroyed or accessed, in case our civilization collapses but members of the species survive to rebuild- so it'd be available to them beyond some basic level of scientifi... I'd disagree to a point. It this "Gravestone" was located where it would exist until the Sun expands and wipes out local space, then anyone who does show up (aliens?), then would be able to find it (hopefully). Finding it, these people (are aliens people?) would very likely spend enormous resources, in time and effort, to decipher it. I know we would if we found an ET device with the accumulated knowledge of their entire civilization, or even if it was only the instructions to Parcheesi... we'd still work to decipher it. Imagine if it told how to produce anti-gravity, or wormholes, or teleport... [More]

Parcheesi... Yeah that's what I mean, better somewhere close to our very noisy location than out in the middle of nowhere like Voyager, although the sun does put a window on that. As for its value to ET- that's the thing: to them I'd imagine it would be the instructions to Parcheesi lol. We've barely developed the technology to get off the planet in any practical way, and anyone who arrives here is probably well beyond our current snapshot in most regards. I can't imagine microchips, nuclear power or genetic engineering would be a surprise. So it would probably have more archaeological value..... [More]
