Several locals called the cops after witnessing a hairy hominid walking around the community of Damariscotta.
While there can be little argument that the existence (or otherwise) of Bigfoot can be a contentious subject, there was no denying the sightings that occurred in Maine last week.
Around a half-dozen people called the police to report a strange bipedal figure covered in hair walking around the local area. It was seen on Main Street as well as outside a school.
It wasn't long before officers had apprehended the curious cryptid.
As it turned out, however, the culprit was little more than a man in a Bigfoot costume.
According to Damariscotta Police Chief Erik Josephson, no charges were filed.
"After a lengthy, exhaustive, and completely serious investigation, members of the Damariscotta Police Department have reached a conclusion: Bigfoot is not real," he wrote on Facebook.
"We understand this may be disappointing to some."
"Frankly, there were members of our department who were secretly hoping we had finally stumbled upon something that would make national news. Sadly, no."
Exactly why the man was wandering around town dressed as Bigfoot remains unclear.
