Richard Dawkins: 'we may be evolving too slowly to keep up'

The evolutionary biologist recently touched on the idea that we may be unable to keep up, biologically speaking.
Mental health issues seem to be rampant in today's modern society, with health services around the globe struggling to keep up with the demand for psychiatric expertise.

But what could account for the overwhelming prevalence of mental health issues in the world today ?

One prominent theory is that our society is simply evolving too fast for biological evolution to keep up with, thus making us mentally ill-equipped to deal with the problems of modern life.

It's an idea that was recently echoed by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins.

"Many people do worry that the pace of change is such that we are no longer well-adapted to live in it," he said during an appearance on the TRIGGERnometry podcast. "This is a worry."
"Certainly, the rate at which we are evolving genetically is minuscule compared to the rate at which we are evolving non-genetically, culturally."

"And much of the mental illness that afflicts people may be because we are in a constantly changing unpredictable environment in a way that our ancestors were not."

That said, Dawkins himself is not entirely convinced that this is the true cause.

"Actually, I think it's amazing how resilient we are," he said. "We do seem to, most of us, manage to cope pretty well with the astonishing rate of change in my lifetime."

So could our rapidly changing world really be the key to understanding the recent rise in mental health issues or is there another explanation ?

The search for answers continues.

Nice sentiments but rather irrelevant as to whether human beings can biologically evolve quickly enough to keep up with a changing environment.

Stop smoking weed and sniffing cocaine, Dawkins. Stop contracting sexually transmitted diseases, like e.g herpes viruses. Stop swallowing the junk medications physicians prescribe.

Alvin Toffler already talked about this in 1970. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Shock

And, David Bowie already sung about it in the 1970's. Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes.

There is an inherent beneficial presumption with "evolving", and I am unsure whether what can more neutrally be described as the cultural "changes" which occur with increasing frequency are beneficial to the overall survival of the species.  I share Dawkins' trepidations generally.

Some (most) people are just weak minded. The prevalence of validation seeking through social media has created a society of weak-minded people.

It’s not created them. It’s exposed them.

It seems to be a circular argument, humans develop tech and society changes but things are only widely adopted if it is a benefit to the majority.  I think problems with mental health have there causes elsewhere. Too many folks looking for interest and hits on their personal YouTube channel comes to mind.

Life is tough. Not everyone makes it.

Depends on the age group we're discussing. There are plenty of very young people who were born into this age. They have been shaped by the sheer stupidity of it all.
