Mysterious 'island' discovered on Mars

NASA is trying to determine the origins of a strange circular feature in the Athabasca region of Mars.
Measuring 1.2 miles in diameter, the peculiar landform was photographed from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Its irregular texture and circular shape stand out like a sore thumb against the smooth surrounding terrain which was produced by some of the planet's most recent lava flows.

Experts have been struggling to determine exactly what processes might have given rise to its formation.

"Perhaps lava has intruded underneath this mound and pushed it up from beneath," NASA suggests on its website. "It looks as if material is missing from the mound, so it is also possible that there was a significant amount of ice in the mound that was driven out by the heat of the lava."

Looks to me like maybe a lava dome. Probably it was a lot higher at one point, and then when the lava receded, it flattened out, like a burn blister.

actually yes ! too much 129 xenon Compared to what ? 129Xenon can be made by cosmic radiation hitting Mars. Since Mars doen't have a magnetic field to protect it from cosmic radiation, there are bound to be more radiation reaching the Mars, thus making more 129Xenon. Anyway why is it impossible to have a thread about Mars, without someone having to mention some fringe ideas about it ? Mars is an endlessly fascinating place in its own right, even without having to insert wild speculation about nuclear attacks and things like that.

huge air bubble in the lava collapsed under the surface before it had time to totally cool is all, no big deal
