Comets could have sparked life on Earth

Did a comet impact kick-start life on Earth ? Image Credit: NASA/JPL
Scientists have demonstrated that a comet impact can kick-start the formation of complex molecules.
The exact process through which the first life forms came in to being on our planet four billion years ago has remained a topic of intense study and debate for centuries.

One theory, which proposes that life on Earth was kick-started by comets, has now been given something of a boost thanks to a team of Japanese researchers who have found a way to demonstrate what happens when a comet strikes the surface of the planet.

To accomplish this the team created a special 'soup' of amino acids, ice and rock and then fired it through a propellant gun to simulate the effects of a comet collision.
What they discovered was that the force of the impact had fused some of the amino acids together as peptides - the first step on the journey towards the formation of more complex molecules.

"This finding indicates that comet impacts almost certainly played an important role in delivering the seeds of life to the early Earth," said Dr Haruna Sugahara.

"It also opens the likelihood that we will have seen similar chemical evolution in other extraterrestrial bodies, starting with cometary-derived peptides."

"Comet impacts are normally associated with mass extinction on Earth, but this works shows that they probably helped kick-start the whole process of life in the first place."

Still the most fundamental question of how life first arose has not been answered. And why would it be? You don't solve a jigsaw puzzle all in one move, you do it a piece at a time. Scientific puzzles are solved in the same, logical, meticulous way. Complaining that the picture is not complete every time a new piece is added is extremely illogical.

I wrote a paper about this in 9th grade. I guess i got the best score anyone ever got on the assignment. That was 15 years ago why does it always take scientists so long to propose all the same ideas i already thought in junior high. It was a little dissapointing to me to grow up an see that alot of the obvious things arent even accepted as fact yet. We still have a long ways to go in our understanding of earth.

It was a little dissapointing to me to grow up an see that alot of the obvious things arent even accepted as fact yet. We still have a long ways to go in our understanding of earth. Things which seem "obvious" aren't necessarily the truth. There is a HUGE amount of difference between a scientist producing a peer reviewed hypothesis and a ninth graders homework. Sc... [More]

Has this hypothesis actually got some evidence now? Or still speculation?

Has this hypothesis actually got some evidence now? Or still speculation? If you read the original article it gives details of the experiments carried out.

This is not panssperia. Panspermia is the hypothesis that life, or the precursors to life, were brought to Earth from space on meteorites or comets. This hypothesis is that the impact of comets caused the chemicals which already existed on Earth to become more complex and to eventually form life. Actually the scientists who published this paper said that comets brought peptides on the young Earth to form the building blocks of life. “Comet impacts might have had a key role in chemical evolution,” says Haruna Sugahara, lead author of the study. “It is possible that comets are delivering p... This model is still very much a form of panspermia since a necessery ingredient for life is considered to be extraterrestrial in nature. I stand corrected. My apologies to Paranomali.

It's called panspermia. Not a bad theory. Panspermia is certainly interesting. I remember hearing of a possible case in India when red rain fell for weeks or possibly months. When examined the water contained cells that have never been seen on Earth before. The documentary I watched had a scientist from the ESA convinced that the cells originated from a comet that exploded over India. http://www.news.com.au/technology/science/panspermia-theorists-say-indias-red-rain-contains-life-not-seen-on-earth/story-fn5fsgyc-1225913620448 However many scientists do not agree that the origin is ET.

There is an article this month in a science and technology magazine I read that has a hypothesis that life may have begun in puddles. Quote, "they demonstrated that polypeptides - molecules essential for complex life - can be formed by mixing amino and hydroxyl acids and then subjecting them to cycles of alternating wet and dry conditions. The process could have take place in a puddle that was drying out and then reforming with the next rain...........just 20 of the day-night, wet-dry cycles were needed to form a complex mixture of polypeptides in the lab." Unquote. The day-night element is a ... [More]

I still like to think we were seeded here by an advanced civilisation for nothing more than their amusement I like to think that we were seeded here randomly because our DNA/RNA is ubiquitous in the universe. Humans and other life forms spring up when they land on a planet that can support us. To me that means that the life on others planets is similar to ours. Honestly, that's what I like to think.
