Michio Kaku: 'teleportation will be possible'

Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku maintains that many Star Trek technologies will become a reality.
Teleporting someone from one place to another in the blink of an eye might seem like something firmly routed within the realm of science fiction, but according to Professor Kaku technologies such as this are not only possible but could even be available within the space of just a few decades.

"A lot of things you see on Star Trek will in fact be possible - like the teleporter," he said.

"Quantum teleportation already exists. In fact, we took a film crew and went to the University of Maryland and actually filmed an atom being teleported. It zapped across the room from one chamber to another. So at an atomic level we do it already. It's called quantum entanglement."
Within ten years, he predicts, scientists will have succeeded in teleporting the first molecule and eventually these same techniques can be adapted to teleport larger objects and even people.

What was once deemed impossible would simply become a scientific "engineering project".

But would teleporting every atom in the human body be a realistic proposition ? Students at the University of Leicester recently conducted a study in which they concluded that it would take quadrillions of years to entangle, read, digitize and teleport every particle in the human body.

There's also the small matter of whether the person would still be alive at the other end.

Don't worry i am doing it for a few people. i will still peek and check to see if i am being defamed or misquoted but really i cant waste my time with people who are basically quite nasty. On line as in real life i have decided to deal with people who debate issues not make personal attacks (And seem to enjoy doing so) I have no problem with people disagreeing with anything i say. Facts can be proven/disproven, while opinions are fair game. I don't see why you are surprised The last few weeks of trying to have an intelligent conversation with you has decided me on this. The right to ignore peo... [More]

Perhaps, if enough of us reported him for continually derailing threads it would stop. Just a thought. I have to confess, I do not understand why threads get closed by mods here. they will admonish one person for being a dik while a dozen other posters in the thread are good and the subject matter is interesting. The then admonished poster can then go on to refute and attack any mod attempt and the threat is - the thread will be closed. ? ? ? On other forums they will just remove the post if offensive or breaking rules, another one closes the thread and 'cleans it ', yet another has a 'pit' th... [More]

I am annoyed because I am telling the truth and you think i am a charlatan or deluded. There is no point in any further discussion. Your randi-ism is not applicable. You are just making up things in your head that never entered mine. I explained exactly and accurately what i was asking, and why. If you cant trust me, then we cant converse. THAT is why I've put you on ignore. I am not the type of person you think i am . You see, because i am simply telling the truth, all the rest of your mental bull**** is exactly that. Rubbish you have constructed in your ignorance. i am not severing contact. ... [More]

You complain that people insult you, and then you insult people. Perhaps you are also a hypocrite? Go on, poke him a bit more and you might see a bit more of the 'real Walker '

Yeah, exactly! By destroying matter, it has to reassemble you. That seems very similar to killing you and making a new one. It might be possible to do it without destroying anything. But it would make a copy of you, and you'd be disappointed that you didn't actually get to go. Harte

Well now this thread is off topic and I am adding to the offense -- closing threads does seem to me a sledgehammer approach. Threads should be closed if they are spam or duplicative or things like that, but because they've gone off topic generally should just require a nudge back. Even if they are wildly off topic, that would seem to be the way the participants want it, so . . .. The most common reason threads get closed here though seems to be when participants get nasty. Again it seems sledgehammerish. I would say in these cases the thread can be cleaned up and appropriate PMs sent to the of... [More]

As I remember the transporter in Star Wars, it did not duplicate you as much as "read" you, destroy you, transmit the information it had read, and then create a "you" at the destination out of that information. The part I get touchy about is the "destroy" part. That is how I understood it worked also. It turned you into energy, read that energy, loaded the data into the transporter banks and then somehow beamed the energy to a new location where it materialized. I never understood why they needed a transporter room. They could do the controls on the bridge, and if they can grab someone off a p... [More]

I wonder if a teleported human would have to be put together like Leeloo on Fifth Element. Just like Leeloo....? ...you just got me interested again - I'm IN!!!
