Statue of King Tut's grandmother unearthed

Posted on Wednesday, 29 March, 2017 | Comment icon 1 comment
A rare alabaster carving of Queen Tiye has been discovered along the west bank of the River Nile.
European archaeologists had been studying the Mortuary Temple of King Amenhotep III near Luxor when the alabaster statue, which is thought to date back more than 3,400 years, was found.

Queen Tiye was the wife of King Amenhotep III and was even believed to be the paternal grandmother of King Tutankhamun - the young boy-pharaoh.

"No alabaster statues of Queen Tiye have been found before now," said Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Enany who described the statue as "unique and distinguished."

"All previous statues of her unearthed in the temple were carved of quartzite."

The mummified remains of Queen Tiye were found over 100 years ago in the Valley of the Kings.

Interesting, but the news article link says there was another statue that was possibly misidentified, so we'll wait and see.
