Strange sea creature washes up in Australia

Social media users have been attempting to determine what this peculiar tentacled monstrosity actually is.
Discovered on a beach in the town of Broome on the northern coast of Western Australia, this unusual specimen sparked some heated debate recently after a photograph of it was posted up on Reddit.

Consisting of a mass of black-tipped tentacles with a swollen central appendage, the creature looks quite unlike anything that you would normally expect to find washed up along the shoreline.

"Mother and girlfriend found this on the beach today," Reddit user Horrorwolfe wrote.

"Any idea what it is ?"
While many suggestions have been put forward, the general consensus seems to be that the creature is in fact a type of sea anemone that happens to have been flipped upside-down.

Some have indicated that it could be Dofleinia armata - otherwise known as the armed anemone.

Known to grow up to 20cm across with tentacles 50cm long, this alien-looking species is one of Australia's largest sea anemones.

Given that it also possesses a rather nasty sting, touching it is definitely not recommended.
