The man, who had been having a nightmare at the time, woke up to find himself in a scene from a horror movie.
Sleepwalking can be a disconcerting thing to contend with at the best of times, but when you end up punching through windows in your sleep, it can also become downright terrifying.
This recently became reality for 27-year-old David Murphy from Cork, Ireland, who had been sound asleep one night when he awoke to find himself standing next to his bedroom window.
This wasn't the worst of it, though, as he quickly realized that the window glass had been smashed to pieces and his mangled hand was now dripping with blood.
He later recalled that he had been having a nightmare at the time in which he had believed himself to be trapped inside a shrinking room. In a bid to escape, he had started pounding his fists against the walls - only to awaken to find that he had actually punched through his bedroom window.
"I have experienced sleepwalking before but nothing like this," he said.
After he woke up, his girlfriend took him to a local hospital where he received 45 stitches. His injured hand also required weeks of physiotherapy in an effort to restore his full use of it.
Murphy has since spoken to a psychiatrist about his bouts of sleepwalking.
"The psychiatrist linked it to my own fear of death, for myself, my friends and loved ones - a form of OCD," he said. "I was prescribed an antidepressant to help with the overthinking."
"At first I felt like taking medication would be like giving in in some way - but it's really helped."
