A new bill will make it illegal for aircraft to release any sort of chemicals for the purpose of geoengineering.
Back in the 1990s, a conspiracy theory emerged suggesting that the vapor trails of high-altitude aircraft that can often be seen criss-crossing the sky are actually trails of chemicals being deliberately sprayed by the government for shadowy, nefarious purposes.
Multiple possible explanations for these alleged 'chemtrails' have been put forward by conspiracy theorists ranging from chemical or biological weapons testing to weather modification.
Suffice to say, there has never been any evidence to indicate that these trails are anything sinister.
Nonetheless, the threat of aircraft spraying chemicals into the atmosphere was enough for Tennessee senate officials to pass a bill to outlaw the practice last year and now Florida is also getting in on the act with a new bill that will also make it illegal to do anything similar.
The specific wording states that it will be illegal to engage in the "injection, release, or dispersion, by any means, of a chemical, a chemical compound, a substance or apparatus into the atmosphere within the borders of Florida for the express purposes of affecting the temperature, weather, climate, or intensity of sunlight."
Anyone caught doing this could face a $100,000 fine and up to 5 years in prison.
"People have a lot of kooky ideas that they can get in and put things in the atmosphere to block the sun and save us from climate change," said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
"We're not playing that game in Florida."
