Dr Max Rempel has made the startling claim that some people carry DNA indicative of alien genetic manipulation.
According to Dr Rempel, who is the founder and chief executive of the DNA Resonance Research Foundation, an examination of the DNA of over 500 families highlighted 11 examples of individuals who seemed to possess DNA that did not match either of their parents.
Having ruled out modern human-based gene editing due to the age of some of the subjects, Rempel suggests that this could be evidence of extraterrestrial genetic manipulation.
"Humanity may be undergoing genetic transformation," he said. "If confirmed, it could be possible to detect which humans carry alien DNA, essentially identifying hybrids."
Dr Rempel's research also looked at the DNA of individuals who claimed to have been abducted by aliens and found evidence of the same non-parental markers in some of them.
He is now hoping to obtain high-resolution DNA sequencing data from these individuals in an effort to determine whether or not extraterrestrial genetic manipulation is at play.
That said, his research has not been peer reviewed and he admits that his findings are not conclusive.
"No conclusive evidence yet, because we need better datasets, which are available only on approval," he said. "That takes time and effort."
One thing is certain - claims like this are bound to stir controversy and demand close scrutiny from other scientists and research bodies.
As things stand, Dr Rempel's findings are certainly intriguing, but also highly dubious.
