Mystery as groups of people seen climbing out of New York City sewers

Credit: Karl Döringer / (PD) Someone has been repeatedly venturing beneath the streets of New York City recently and it has nothing to do with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Police officers in the Big Apple have been attempting to determine why there have been so many sightings of people - sometimes whole groups at a time - clambering out of manholes.

Video footage showing this happening has been circulating for a while now on social media.

It remains unclear what these people are actually doing down in the sewers and, according to the police, an investigation of the sewer has found nothing of any significance."The NYPD, to make sure there was not a threat to the public, sent their highly trained Emergency Services Unit officers into the sewer system to make sure nothing nefarious had been left behind by the individuals - nothing was found," the department told NBC.

"And the city Environmental Protection Department, which manages the system, also went in and apparently found no damage to the sewer system equipment."

One possible explanation for the mystery is that people have been searching for valuables that have been dropped and washed down the sewers, but this seems somewhat unlikely.

As things stand, the search for answers continues.
