US scientists discover 'stupidity virus'

The virus is believed to attack DNA and can significantly impair a person's intelligence and memory.
Researchers from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the University of Nebraska had been studying throat microbes when they found traces of algal virus ATCV-1 in swabs drawn from the throats of otherwise healthy volunteers.

Their studies revealed that the virus, which usually only infects a particular species of green algae, was linked to a lower attention span, decreased spatial awareness and reduced visual processing capabilities in those who were infected by it.
The scientists couldn't explain exactly how the virus had managed to infect so many of the volunteers but concluded that there was no evidence that it was particularly contagious.

"My best guess is that these viruses may infect another microorganism besides the algae that we have been studying," said Professor James L. Van Etten.

"This other microorganism may be the way that the virus gets into the throat."

So when people go out and commit crimes and do really stupid things, you know, like stuff that's on the 9 pm news, all they have to say is, "I'm an idiot, I got that algae in me..." Honestly, some days, I see so much insanity... Criminals don't have impunity from repercussions due to the person being unintelligent. You can plea insanity, but you can't plea unintelligent. That relation was a bit less than sane.

It will be interesting to see if there are any demographics that have this virus to a larger, or lesser, extent. Like perhaps the urban poor have it 99% of the time, and the top 1% of income earners have it only 1%. Who knows? Will be interesting to see the numbers someday. A sequence-specific assay detected ATCV-1 in throat samples from 40 of 92 (44%) people in the study. http://www.nih.gov/researchmatters/november2014/11102014virus.htm

Doctor: So what was Alzheimer's first name? Patient: Ah....ehm.... Doctor: That is how it starts! Alois Alzheimer born in Germany, I think he was a neuropathologist or something. Now you all have the answer if the doctor ever asks lol
