Was there really a "Great Flood" ?

The story of the 'Great Flood' that lead to Noah building an ark as described in the Bible has intrigued historians and scientists for centuries. But was there really a flood of this magnitude or was it a representation of something more down to earth ?
Approximately 9,000 to 5,000 years ago in the northern Turkish province of Sinop, an event of spectacular historic magnitude took place. So spectacular, in fact, that some believe it represents proof that the “Great Flood” recounted in the Bible may have been an actual representation of real events.

Once again creationists are trying to sell an impossible story as fact...contrary to the contentions posited by them the canopy theory (most of the water now in the oceans was in the atmosphere in a great canopy) can be shown to be an impossiblity, not an improbability and the rain mentioned in the myth would have had to fall at a rate of 6 inches per minute for 40 days and nights with a resulting raise in atmospheric temperatures (when water converts from the gaseous state to the solid state heat is released) of several thousand degrees, which would have instantly incinerated the Ark, Noah, F... As we have seen, regional flooding is not unknown. Similar stories around the world do not proce the floods took place at the same time. Study of deposits can show when flooding occurred and where. Even the Ark story has changed over the years, based on new research.

This bit jumped out at me: In the beginning of 2006, University of Richmond professor Porcher Taylor declared that according to an extensive study made over years of satellite photography there is a foreign object encrusted in the area northeast of the mountain, the length of which coincides perfectly with that of the ark recounted in the Bible. Such satellite images from above Ararat have inspired the curiosity of a great number of scientists since this declaration was made in 1974. Several expeditions of investigators also managed to rescue remains of petrified wood, as well as 13 strong anc... [More]

It really depeds on your beliefs. Most christians would believe that God is able to do absolutly anything. Was there really a "Great Flood"? I believe it will always be an unexplained mystery, and scientists should stop trying! There could have been an ark, but it would be completely impossible to fit two of each animal into it. The story must have its mistakes.

I believe it will always be an unexplained mystery, and scientists should stop trying! Why shouldn't what is evidentally pure mythology be debunked? If a many wants to believe mythology, it is his right, but he shouldn't expect others to accept it or debunk it...as I pointed out before, it is very obviously impossible without the natural laws being waived for this to happen and there is no evidence that these laws have ever been waived or suspended even for a moment.

There are a lot of illusions about what words actually mean in the Bible. The word translated as 'earth' has nothing to do with what we call the third planet from our sun. This word, which implied the existence of human, plant and animal life on dry land, could not have included the polar regions, swamps, bogs or everglades, tidal regions, mountainous areas above the tree line, or anything to do with water. The biblical flood wasn't global, only a regional flood affecting the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas where the adamic races were found. Scientists will never decipher the Bible sinc...
