Helmut Kichmeier, 27, was found by his wife, Joanna, staring into thin air after the bungle in their north London home as they prepared for a tour. Mr Kichmeier, whose stage name is Hannibal Helmurto, had learned the skill to put himself into a somnabulistic trance to help him swallow multiple swords on stage.

I'm still skeptical about being hypnotized. Has it ever been proven to be possible?

Absolutely not possible. If he went catatonic, it was from more than his "self-hypnosis". Hypnosis is not a magic trance and it can't be 'reflected' by a mirror and make you accidentally hypnotize yourself. This article is absolutely ridiculous and if anything in it is true, it is from some sort of psychological issue with the hypnotist himself.

I don't understand hypnosis skeptics, sure being skeptical about certain aspects of hypnosis I can understand but I don't get what exactly they don't believe. My understanding is it's just an altered state of consciousness much like the hypnocogic state between sleep and awake, just maybe a bit more lucid than that. I don't buy this, I can't imagine how this would be possible because wouldn't you be unable to conduct the hypnosis if you we're starting to enter the altered state of consciousness required for hypnosis?

Because most skeptics, (myself included), believe that hypnosis is a hoax that works only because people are fooled into thinking that it works. A hypnotist simply makes you feel relaxed, then tells you what to do. Which works since people are naturally disposed to following orders... [More]

Hypnosis is generally achieved through relaxed concentration. One can concentrate upon: a thought, a pendulum, a reflection in a mirror, or just about anything else. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, akin to dreaming, or the hypnogogic state entered between being awake, and falling asleep. It is very real, and not a hoax...though many stage hypnotists find it easier to hoax with the aid of confederates than to actually perform true hypnosis. I have been hypnotized, and hypnotized others, in clinical situations. The more intelligent one is, the easier he/she can enter a hynotic tra... [More]
