AC Grayling has put together a new book with the aim of giving atheists their own bible.
"The Good Book" combines the wisdom of well known philosophers, poets, sages and modern scientists to offer atheists inspiration and guidance. Instead of the Ten Commandments the book states : "Love well, seek the good in all things, harm no others, think for yourself, take responsibility, respect nature, do your utmost, be informed, be kind, be courageous."
In the beginning was the word and the word was. . . good? Four hundred years after the publication of the King James Bible, philosopher AC Grayling has written a book which offers atheists a "bible" of their very own.

We don't steal because it's detrimental to a functioning society which we choose to live in because it gives us the best living conditions. 1 It has nothing to do with it being "wrong" or "evil." I didn't say atheists are evil. I said that 2 atheism doesn't recognize the existence of morality just like it doesn't recognize the existence of a deity. If someone wants to kill someone, they're going to be deterred by consequences, not because someone says it's wrong. Which law was based on the majority's morality? I'll just assume you're American and if not you can correct me. Here in America, the... [More]

What are you failing to understand? You ARE misrepresenting morality by limiting it to a divine definition. http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/morality-definition/ Now. See. If I'd read that before posting, then I wouldn't have posted...because that pretty much spells it out...

I have hashed that one out a thousand times simple logic leads one to the divine. How so, because I believe the exact opposite. I'm not saying there is not a perfectly good reason not to believe in the divine. I'm saying many people are indoctrinated into the idea without looking for it themselves. Just like a religion. Their parents and teachers may have put in the thought .... Maby.... But a vast amount have just followed the tutalige of the institution not unike the insitutions of religions. I know, I have been to college. I have watched it happen and was amoung the followers. I know better... [More]

..... And once again, nobody knows for sure, but these would be Christians or (insert religion here).....basically believers. I think this has more to do with one considers divine, rather than what is being defined as divine to one by others who are as yet unsure themselves. To believe is not necessarily to be without doubt; it's one step shy of making a commitment in truth. Which implies that believers do not, in fact, have complete assurance regarding their beliefs. To believe is to have a certain degree of faith in the object/subject of the belief. Anything less than ~41253 degrees of certa... [More]

What are you failing to understand? You ARE misrepresenting morality by limiting it to a divine definition. http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/morality-definition/ I'm not misrepresenting morality. I have, throughout this thread, specifically stated that there cannot be absolute objective morality without the divine. I'm not claiming that people don't have their own internal code, or that societies don't have their own code, only that these codes are subjective and mere opinion. This view of morality is decidedly different from that of a theist who believes that there is an absolute moral code ... [More]

2: Disagreed based upon moral, vice morality (google define:morality ... I especially like the "...practical lesson" part, which attends to the "best function" aspect pointed out). The law, anarchists, criminals and everyone in between have a moral code; not a new concept sociologically-speaking or psychologically. ("right", "wrong", "good", "evil" are all, by their nature, philosophical ) Debating it at all equates to giving it recognition, conceptually-speaking. Consequences, even if not verbally announced at a constant interval, still equate to someone saying something is wrong; even if it'... [More]

Clearly an atheist will reject divine morality, however subjective is not the same as non-existent.

Clearly an atheist will reject divine morality, however subjective is not the same as non-existent. As far as its practical utility in recognizing it as a governing force in an atheist's life, it is. My original post said that atheists don't need a guide to conform to, as we reject objective morality. That was the context, and that is all that I have been arguing.

The whole idea of morality being of divine origin cracks me up. God did not create man in his image. Man creates their own Gods. It's been that way since the dawn of time. And once a particular God no longer fulfills man's needs, that God is discarded and replaced with a new one over and over again.
