Genetic analysis of a shrunken head verifies anecdotal accounts of violent head-hunting in South America.
They've appeard in movies such as Beetlejuice and Harry Potter and thousands of them were manufactured in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to turn a profit, but one shrunken head recently discovered proved to be the real deal.
A remarkably well-preserved shrunken head has just been authenticated by DNA analysis, which provides strong evidence that anecdotal accounts of violent head-hunting in South America were true. The study, published in the latest issue of Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, marks the first successful effort to unveil the genetic make-up of a shrunken head.

I wasn't aware that there was any question concerning the validity of shrunken heads. That there were many fakes is certainly true, but there were many "real" ones as well, documented by explorers into those lands. I wish we could test the shrunken heads that were found in the german concentration camps to see if they were real but them, along with the lampshades and human soap, all are "missing"

Shrunken heads are real. Why someone would want to spend their time replicating them is kind of weird and sick. Remember most of them were real people (not the fakes) and they probably would have died horrible deaths at the hands of their enemies.Keeping these heads in museums for people to stare at is very macabre, they should be DNA tests to verify that they were real people and have them respectfully buried or cremated. Need that technology for some swollen heads... Bravo! Thanks for the link, Karlis. That head in first pic reminds me of someone so I've just been rolling on the floor laughing for real.

Eta:sorry didn't mean to sound political- just meant "chalk it up to tall tales told from war? Neither. Babies pulled from incubators were never presented WMD's were never presented The shrunken heads, skin lampshades, human soap, etc. were all presented as evidence and displayed (and photographed)
