Lunacy and the full moon

Over the centuries a 'full moon' has been blamed for all manner of ailments from vampirism and lycanthropy to full blown insanity. But how much truth to this is there, does the moon really trigger strange behaviour or is this simply a myth passed down over the ages ?
Across the centuries, many a person has uttered the phrase “There must be a full moon out there” in an attempt to explain weird happenings at night. Indeed, the Roman goddess of the moon bore a name that remains familiar to us today: Luna, prefix of the word “lunatic.” Greek philosopher Aristotle and Roman historian Pliny the Elder suggested that the brain was the “moistest” organ in the body and thereby most susceptible to the pernicious influences of the moon, which triggers the tides. Yes, that little fact tends to push any "lunacy" claims into the psychological realm, and not the physical. I don't see how the moon could have any significant physical affect anyway. If it did, then would it not also be observable in animals? Not suggesting that it has anything to do with the pyschological realm but lunar tides (along with other influencing agents) do actually have an impact on some animals. This from a glossary on tidal terminology from the Intergovernmental (Australia & N.Z.) Committee and Surveying: "Biological processes which re-occur on a regular basis governed by an... [More]

This from a glossary on tidal terminology from the Intergovernmental (Australia & N.Z.) Committee and Surveying: "Biological processes which re-occur on a regular basis governed by an internal timing mechanism are known as circadian rhythms. The timing may be reset by environmaental changes such as changing length of day. Some animals also respond to tidal cycles, such as the spring-neap cycle. Some crabs have both circadia... [More]

That still has more to do with the position of the moon, not the phase. I have no doubt that the moon plays a significant role, but I believe it has more to do with it's proximity to the Earth and not whether it is "full", according to the classic myth. Agree totally. Its probably to do with Perigee and Apogee. I think that, this year Apogee is on July 7th (406,232 kms) and Perigee is on Oct. 13th (369,067kms). We'll have to observe on these dates and see if the 'lunatic fringe' respond!

Knock yourself out! I await your full report The report may be slightly biased, I think that I'm possibly one of the 'lunatic fringe' myself. We might have to use Slave2Fate as the control portion of the experiment!

If you want sanity as a control factor, I may not be the best choice. Waca, would you consider acting as the neutral petrie control dish? It appears that Slave2Fate and I have both ends of the insanity spectrum covered, now all we need is that 'balancing factor' and it should be one 'ripper' of a report!!

Theoretical scientists have assured me that "lunar madness" does not and can not exist. But people who have just as adamantly assured me that it does exist have included psychiatrists, psychologists, psych nurses, hospital ward attendants, social workers, street cops, cabbies, bus drivers, long-distance truckers, bartenders and night club comedians. Sometimes pragmatic knowledge trumps theoretical.

So, there's still uncertainty out there about our closest neighbor i take it... (scientists bah, sometimes i wonder) It's been said, to many of the Native Nth Americans Indians (other cultures around the world i'm sure...to each their own tho); the moon (symbol of power) always represented direction vision and guidance (a respected ceremonial symbol) with the ability to change our thoughts and behaviour/mood... also, the four main stages of man infancy/middle age/old age/and death ...four main stages of the moon (new moon/first quarter/full moon last /third quarter...etc i'm howling!...AAARRRW... But people who have just as adamantly assured me that it does exist have included psychiatrists, psychologists, psych nurses, I would say it does, definately...I know someone who suffers from dementia, she's much worse when there's a full moon.
