A molecule that until now only existed in theory has finally been made. The "Rydberg molecule" is formed through a weak chemical bond between two atoms and reinforces theories pertaining to the way electrons behave and interact.
A molecule that until now existed only in theory has finally been made. Known as a Rydberg molecule, it is formed through an elusive and extremely weak chemical bond between two atoms. "

well, this is strange, my screen suddenly froze with a strange Ωmega symbol on it...

Two types of electrons revolve around the nucleus of an atom. One is the s or synchronous orbit. The other is the p orbit which is a paired orbit; an elongated orbit covering both sides of the nucleus. But this Rydberg molecule is more an explanation of Planet X.

well, this is strange, my screen suddenly froze with a strange Ωmega symbol on it... mine froze too, but I didn't get a symbol. I just searched for the article on google and viewed it in cache mode, and that fixed the problem.

well, this is strange, my screen suddenly froze with a strange Ωmega symbol on it... Is that a reference to a certain Star Trek: Voyager episode? If not, then well that's just weird. --Mandalore--

You can kinda understand electrons around a nucleus in a semi-classical sense as follows: The electrons in `orbit' around a nucleus have 4 characteristics (or quantum numbers, if you want): 1. A primary energy level (quantum number n = 1, 2, 3,... ) 2. An orbital momentum (quantum number l = 0, 1, 2, ... (n-1)) 3. A magneti... [More]

Is that a reference to a certain Star Trek: Voyager episode? You have a ST logo as your avatar and you still have to ask... ?

In an ultracold Noble gas like rubidium, this distant electron can partially couple with a normal rubidium atom creating a new type of chemical bond, which can last for a very long time in atomic terms (18 microseconds is an eternity for an electron). Shut my mouth. Rubidium is an alkali metal, not a noble gas. The 5s1 electron (n = 5, l = 0) gets excited by the laser. Somehow they get the 5s1 electron to an ns1 (n 5, l = 0) state, I don't know how. A laser would put the electron into an np (n = 5, l = 1) state (excitation by lasers changes l by +/- 1). In their paper (http://arxiv.org/abs/08... [More]

I have nothing to add to the other well-informed responses except to say that I am dismayed by "Electrons can be pictured as orbiting around a central nucleus". No. No, they cannot be pictured as "orbiting" around a nucleus. We can only plot out areas where they might be.
