A new study in which a number of cats were tested by attaching food to pieces of string and observing the cats to see if they could work out how to retrieve it. The result showed that cats could not handle more than one option whereas dogs could.
The thought processes of 15 cats were tested by attaching food to the end of lengths of string and observing whether they could figure out that pulling the line brought the treats closer. The cats had no problem with tackling single pieces of string. However, when faced with two options, experts discovered that unlike their canine counterparts, cats were unable to consistently pick a baited string over a dummy."

I believe animals are a lot like people. I've owned dogs and cats pretty much my whole life and I've had some that were intelligent and some that weren't. I think that some dogs are smarter than some cats, and vice-versa. The dog that I own now is really cute, but dumber than a box of rocks. She definitely is not smarter than any of my three cats. She couldn't find her way out of a paper bag if her life depended on it!

My female collie is so smart she can retrieve the TV channel changer on command. Let's see anyone teach a cat to do that. However, in defense of cats they do have very good instincts and can manage to survive on their own (not in a healthy manner though). Basically, we humans have influenced domestic animals so that they need us in order to live.

So your a mind-reader then eh? Because you seem to know what the cat is thinking... We have to base intelligence on what the animal can do, how much smart does it really require for the task done? A cat doesn't really do anything that would require a smart brain, it just seems to have behaviors and routines that it follows. You are the one that is biased or ignorant for not giving the dog any gredits for all the great things it can do and assuming that the cat is equally smart without it having to do any smart things. Do you think the cats walk around philosophying? So what do you base the int... [More]

A dog can count, the dog is able to understand human languish even thought they don't speak, a dog shows various kinds of emotions and understands emotions of others, a dog must undergoe thought processes to learn new things, and much much more. These are all greate qualities of intelligence. And yes, cats are different. Try to learn something to a cat and it will just run away with no idea what's going on. The cat seem to lack the necessary brain functions that are needed to let it get started. The dog have proven himself to be quite intelligent, so what is it with cats that makes them equall... [More]

Cat's can just as easily, dependent upon size, retrieve a remote control for a T.V as well..... Don't be biased.

I would first like to see a cat that can pick up a tv remote in their very tiny mouths. This is why many people thinks cats are stupid, because they can't physically perform the same commands a dog can. A cat can go to the remote if you tell it to, but once it gets there... then what's it going to do? A cat can sniff out people buried in rumble five times better than a German Shephard, and it can crawl down to them much easier as well. Some cats are used in search and rescue. However, because very few cats see this action as beneficial to themselves, they won't perform it because they get noth... [More]

Dogs have a more direct approach to showing intelligent behavior. They do it to please their masters. Cats could care less what there owners think and do what they please when and where they want to. Cats do though want to be loved by their owners but even then not much changes in the like me or whatever attitude that cats have. Cats show great intelligence in behavior in tricks and the such under controlled situations and extensive training, not because they are less intelligent but because they are so intelligent and it takes a lot of devotion to train a cat to display such behavior. Roundin... [More]

Exactly. Thus pointing out the major social differences between cats and dogs. Dogs are a pack animal and need social order and social status, cats don't. Saying dogs are more intelligent because dogs follow commands is erroneous. It relates to social groups and cats don't have these. Intelligence is subjective. Some cats are more social than others, though. They're not loners, at any rate. Some colonies can get as large as 50+ cats, though I have never personally worked with one that large. There's a small group I've been with for several months, about 20 strong, that is just... they're pecul... [More]

Dogs are NOT smarter than cats. When you yell at a dog for crapping on the lawn, it thinks, 'Oh no! I've upset the master! Now I might not get food! And I like food!'. When you yell at a cat for crapping on the lawn, it thinks, 'Your lawn? YOUR lawn? This is MY lawn.' Even if dogs are smarter than cats, smartness does not necessarily induce betterness.
