Jupiter moon could one day break free

Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system powered by tidal heating from the pull of Jupiter's gravity, however scientists believe it may one day break free and become dormant.
Io may be close to thermal equilibrium, according to a study published this week in Nature. And if the new findings are correct, the volcanically wild moon could one day break free of Jupiter's hold — and lose its rare, volcanic splendor."

What I wish to know is whether the radius of Io's orbit is shrinking or expanding. If it happens to be shrinking, it may wander so close that the tidal forces will shatter the moon to peices and form a spectacular ring system that can match that of Saturn's. This may also happen to Neptune's moon Triton.

Hi Xammu; But if its orbit is getting larger it could only mean one thing, do i need to elaborate? for example. earths moon, the orbit is getting larger and within a few billion years it will leave earths orbit completely, but by the time that happens the sun wouldve eaten the earth. or you can look at mars, one moon's orbit is getting closer and will eventualy crash into the planet and the other is getting further away and, like our moon, it will leave mars' hold completely (eventualy)
