A "one way trip" to the planets

A senior NASA official has suggested that in the future volunteers may be wanted to undertake voyages to distant planets with no expectation of ever getting back, likening such journeys to those of the early seafaring pioneers.
It is often described as "the final frontier", and not just by those who follow the adventures of Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise. The phrase, though, may take an even more literal meaning for those exploring space in the future."

Look! Think about it... would NASA offer these one way trips without even sussing out the viability of colonization on other planets? No! Of course they wouldn't. Believe me, there is gonna be so much information, and assistance, probably even some prepared area's for the settlers to hole up at etc. Where's your sense of adventure? Yes, it will be tough, that's what it's all about. It's a given that there will be obstacles along the way. But I don't think that NASA will send a party of travellers to a planet knowing that there will be no food sources or facilities for habitation. etc. That wou... [More]

I don't know, I would rather explore the wonders of this planet before going to another planet. I don't think it would be murder, it wouldn't be hard to cover up, if people died of starvation they would just say that there was an earthquake and cracked the room they were in letting out all the oxygen or something like that, it wouldn't be a hard coverup. I'm gonna hope that they are prepared and make sure the living situation on the planet stays alive. Talking Mars here, trust me, I believe that NASA knows a lot more about that beautiful red planet than it has let on. But, besides that, if a c... [More]

no....it will work like this a group of people will land on mars, start building a place to live for the others and they will get about 10% done before they run out of resources. Then i assume NASA will provide them with special lethal injections so they die a painless death then the next group takes over when they arrive and it goes on untill the place is complete then no more suicide missions the occupants on mars then should be able to live out the rest of thier lives there but there will be casualtys for at least the first 3 trips Why in the world would you think that we couldn't make a re... I think the ideal situation is to create a launch facility on the moon which would allow a Mars trip that requires a lot less fuel problems. What a good idea! I shall enlist you for attachment to my particular convoy, as Campaign Coordinator, to the Mars mission, forthwith.

It could happen when The Allmighty Buck ! is overcome. This seems to be Mankinds largest holdback. The sooner we learn to work as one Planet of one Species the quicker we may acheive such Lofty Goals. Until then its bussiness as always ! Kill, Destroy, remove, exploit, forget All that makes us so unique ! Is Mankinds way of the Day! Shamie! Shamie! I want the First Ticket Off this Rock!

a group of people will land on mars, start building a place to live for the others and they will get about 10% done before they run out of resources run out of resources? theres no reason why they couldn't pull oxygen and water out of the soil and also grow a large amount of their own food. Dried food could also be sent there in large quantities which would last a small group of people many years.

Maybe some aliens will land and they will give us their technology, and out of appreciation we can build them a lovely District-9 for them to live in....lol...

I don't think they would be asking family's with kids to go on suicide missions in the name of exploration. In the future families will go into space but it will be fairly safe for them by then. Oh to die on another planet, that would be cool well sort of I second...That is very true Thanks B???

Yes thats correct. But unless we take initial steps we'll never know. Unless humanity is willing to "invest" in space exploration more than the 0.5% that NASA is investing and the 0.000001% the rest of the world is, then we'll never get going. Its in our nature to explore, discover and progress. There will be risks but there will be no shortages of volunteers and risk-takers, its always been like that. And after we get going and the major corporations in this world start sniffing possible huge returns on possible investments, watch out! We'll be taking small steps at a time. The distance in our... Thanks but I can't take credit for this as NASA is already considering it. However, depending on the salary and fringe benefits, I'd certainly give that job consideration.
