One of the last remaining Galapagos giant tortoises left in the world has delighted conservationalists when a number of unhatched eggs were found in his enclosure following an encounter with female members of a tortoise subspecies.
Lonesome George, the last remaining giant tortoise of his kind, may soon be a father to the delight of conservationists. Unhatched eggs have been found in his "bachelor" pen in the Galapagos Islands, his keepers said on Tuesday."

If he is the last of his species. Why don't anyone just take some of his DNA and try cloning more of his species. That can help save the species from extinction? So why don't they try doing that right now?

So why don't they try doing that right now? Well...that wouldn't save the species - it would just prolong its existence for awhile. It wouldn't allow the species to grow naturally as a whole because he can't really mate with his own clone, now could he?
