Two worlds collide in deep space

Astronomers have observed two distant planets that collided thousands of years ago in what would have been a catastrophic event for both bodies, the smaller being destroyed completely and the larger severely damaged by the impact.
Two distant planets orbiting a young star apparently smashed into each other at high speeds thousands of years ago in a cosmic pileup of cataclysmic proportions, astronomers announced Monday.
