Traditional carols are 'nonsense', says bishop

A leading bishop has blasted certain traditional Christmas carols as "nonsense" on the grounds that they have turned Jesus in to a Father Christmas figure. He described songs such as Away in a Manger as "embarrassing".
Some traditional carols are “nonsense” and have turned Jesus into a Father Christmas figure, according to a leading bishop. Away in a Manger cannot be sung “without embarrassment”, Once in Roy al David’s City is “Victorian behaviour control”; and O Come, All Ye Faithful is misleading, said the Bishop of Croydon, the Rt Rev Nick Baines.

Does have a nice ring to it. Yeah lets outlaw fruitcake and leave Santa and the songs alone. The trouble is that you "developed country" folks have never had a traditional West Indian fruitcake. Cherry Brandy, rum, candied fruits all mixed together and soaked for a few weeks before being mixed into the cake. Slice of that and a glass of punch de creme. Yummie. Gotta say nothing quite like a Trinidad Christmas and yes, I do love the carols myself even though they have nothing to do with reality. They are great music. Is Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on the bishops banned list? What about Santa... [More]

Cherry brandy? Yumm I probably would give that one a try *LOL* One slice and you will be under the table. I always found it curious that kids could not drink but when it came to Christmas fruitcake we could imbibe as much as we could. Fortunately my parents were pretty reasonable about us having things like wine and eggnog (Trinidad eggnog is made with rum ... lots of it)

I must admit I'm a Carols-Tragic. I love'em, absolutely love-em. It's why Christmas is my favourite holiday of the year I actually have a mixed response to the bishop. I am leaning heavily in the direction of the consensus in that the bishop is simply whining for the sake of it. But there is a small part of me that does see some of these Carols as turning Jesus into something more.... sanitised..... than what the true portrayal in the Bible is. The song the article first quotes (Away in a Manger) does turn Jesus into something akin to a fluffy, cuddly teddy-bear. There are quite a few songs th... [More]

WB PA (btw) lol I am leaning heavily in the direction of the consensus in that the bishop is simply whining for the sake of it. Yup sounds like he is lol Sounds a lot like the minister from my daughters church... he stated that the church's halloween party, the kids were not to dress up in scary costumes...but sent in these massive 10 meter balloons, that led to a number ... I sure the good Bishop means no harm in his opinion of christmas carols...sometimes ones education on a subject that is embedded in tradition forgets that they are not giving a lecture... ...I don't think many people really care...they just like the carols. I mean...how would a church christmas play go...without singing 'away in a manger'?... I'm sure God has bigger fish to fry... seax

Whats wrong with fruit cake? There is a place in Texas that makes a delicious fruit cake. I think the bishop is a fruit cake. Virgin birth, if that is not a fairy story I don't know what is. Happy Yuletide, Wolf. While I will confess to being in the minority who like fruitcake - Mother had a recipe that called for spirits to be used and for it to be aged 6 months - I don't think anyone who has seen the TV shots of homemade cannon, etc. being used to compete for a record distance throwing them after Christmas season will have any doubts about the common sentiment.
