NASA photographs "trees" on Mars

By T.K. Randall

These tree-like shapes aren't actually trees at all but sand dunes coated in a thin layer of frozen carbon dioxide.
The new photographs have caused quite a stir on-line however while the idea of finding live trees growing on Mars might be a desirable one in this case unfortunately the explanation is not quite so exciting.
A Nasa probe has sent back photographs of what appears to be trees on the planet's surface. The images appear to show rows of dark "conifers" sprouting from dunes and hills on the planet surface. But the scene is actually an optical illusion.

maybe it would be worth it if the trees have their own legs and are able to cut themselves down to build huts for their leaves to fall in if we're going to design trees, lets design them so they grow into houses

If they really were some type of plant life, NASA would just deny that, too. We'll probably never know the truth of what's on Mars or any other planet. Great unsubstantiated commentary...another CT appears, sans substance--a typical albeit common and depressing experience. We already do know the truth about what's on Mars, to the extent that we know it.

Wouldn't it be possible, MID, that if, when Mars had a warmer environment that could have supported life, and if the trend towards it's current state was slow enough, that plant like life could have evolved in some manner, though restricted enough to be hard to detect? It may not be like plant life as we'd recognize it, but sharing a similar evolutionary tract? A lot of what ifs, I know. Pursuing it is a interesting train of thought, I think. Yes it is alot of what-ifs, but it's also an interesting train of thought that could provoke some similarly interesting discussion. Not knowing exactly w... [More]

Of course the expression "Question Authority" comes to mind. It would not be lying of course if NASA just happened to be wrong. It is a very interesting image. I had said to a friend at work that it really looks almost like a painting. It really has artisitic and paint like features. I have to admit that when I first saw the headline I misread it. I really thought it said "NASA photographs 'trees' on Moon" and my jaw dropped. I thought TALM was right! Then I realized that it was Mars. These objects really look like some form of vegative life form in the image. That dosen't mean that they are b... [More]

What I am truly convinced of is that if NASA said what was depicted in the photo was bird droppings, The masses (including the HB's here (skeptics)) would believe it if you employ the logic Waspie-Dwarf brought to this table of discusion. Why do people always insist on this binary classification? Why does everyone have to be either a "believer" (and if you are, it seems, then you have to believe in everything from any "alternative" source, and not believe anything the Big Bad NASA says), or a "skeptic" (and if you are, it seems, then you have to accept everything the Big Bad Guvmint ever tells... There is no way of knowing what were looking at, and since (might makes right) with the NASA worshipers, and they offer nothing but the standard released explanations, we have greatly diminished our capacity as a human race to think outside the propaganda box. However for the true researchers out there who have the ability to think for themself's, the possibilities are out there to be found I am sure. There is a way. However, in order to know you have to be educated in the sciences involved. Most people aren't, and of course Mars has presented some utterly incredible views to our instrumentati... [More]

The picture linked to at the beginning of this thread is very low resolution. Here is the full-resolution photograph: http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/images/2009/details/cut/PSP_007962_2635_cut.jpg You'll notice that all the black streaks start at the tops of ridges and run down in one direction. On the left side of the image just over halfway down, you can see a cloud of dust surrounding one. The landslide on large sand dunes explanation makes perfect sense, and was what I figured it was before I even read the captions when I saw the full res picture (which I saw before I read this thread) It i... What I am seeing in this photo is a complete lack of shadows that would surly be cast if the black matter rose into the sky. So far I am not seeing any indication that the black matter is rising into the sky. However though, I am taking this photo very seriously and working with it in all the ways I know how. If I come up with any fishy business, I WILLbe back................
