Did life on Earth originate in outer space ?

A leading British scientist has claimed that there is overwhelming evidence to support the distant origins theory.
The theory suggests that the seeds of life would have hitched a ride on a comet before being deposited on the Earth in a collision. If this were true it would mean that not only is all life on Earth alien but that we are also not alone in the universe.
Prof Chandra Wickramasinghe, of Cardiff University, said new research "overwhelmingly" supported the view that human life started from outside our Earth. The Astrobiologist said the first "seeds of life" were deposited on our plant from space 3,800m years ago.

I for one definitely agree that it is possible that our organisms of life started on another planet like cross pollination. The universe is too big for us to be the only living things in it. I know the universe doesn't work as rationally as that but, I'm still a strong believer. Has anyone else ever thought about the way aliens are portrayed? They always have a head, torso, limbs and eyes which is all in the same order as our own anatomy. Who's to say that there isn't a physical being, such as an alien, shaped differently. Maybe it doesn't have a part of it's body shaped like a torso. Say it's... [More]

I think its all a bit silly really, and I can't see how he has proof for it. When he says all "human life", I assume he actually means "all life", given that we are genetically related. And if he means "all life", then how vague can you get? All ingredients that formed the chemical make up of our planet came from outer space, either before the planet was formed, or from comets and asteroids. Unless he's suggesting fully formed DNA came from outer space, which begs the question why did it have to form in outer space?

Humans are all aliens who came to earth from outer space, a leading British scientist has claimed. By Andrew Hough Prof Chandra Wickramasinghe said his research showed all humans were aliens. The professor said his evidence showed humans, and all life on Earth, came from aliens brought by comets hitting the planet. The professor, of Cardiff University, said new research "overwhelmingly" supported the view that human life started from outside our Earth. The Astrobiologist said the first "seeds of life" were deposited on our plant from space 3,800 million years ago. Read more... My question to t... [More]

Panspermia is what this is called. Very well could be possible, but I'm not sure that makes us all 'aliens' per say.

One cant help but wonder where it all started in the begining, I mean if its microbal and came from space seeds then where did the seeds come from and at what point in time did they begin life, I know we most likely will never know that answer but its fun to imagine how it all began,

I read that some comets and meteorites have on them complex protiens and sugars (amino acids) which are vital to all known life. Also when life was fist thought to begin on earth it was an incredibly poisonous place for anything to start to group in the exact way they were needed to. Of course, even if panspermia is found to have happend then we are still no closer to finding out how/where these building blocks of life first formed.

I read that some comets and meteorites have on them complex protiens and sugars (amino acids) which are vital to all known life. Simple amino acids and organic molecules are found throughout the cosmos, because they form naturally. Also when life was fist thought to begin on earth it was an incredibly poisonous place for anything to start to group in the exact way they were needed to.
