Can we dispose of nuclear waste in volcanoes ?

It seems like the ideal way to dispose of radioactive materials within nature's biggest furnaces.
There are some 29,000 tons of spent uranium fuel rods in the world but while incinerating them inside volcanoes might seem like a sure-fire way to dispose of them in reality even a volcano doesn't meet the heat requirements to do this.
Dumping all our nuclear waste in a volcano does seem like a neat solution for destroying the roughly 29,000 tons of spent uranium fuel rods stockpiled around the world. But there’s a critical standard that a volcano would have to meet to properly dispose of the stuff, explains Charlotte Rowe, a volcano geophysicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

it is good only for as long as nothing wrong happen . Have you forget about the Chernobyl disaster? having a nuclear reactor next to your house , is it same as living next to a volcano . it's only matter of time . It's been more than twenty years since that's happened. Nuclear accidents aren't the norm and there are many sites all over the world. As FootBeef said, as well as others who commented on the actual article, nuclear waste can and should be recycled. Then this need to dispose of what isn't really waste can be eliminated.

Excellent way to put radioactive matter into the atmosphere.

That is a fantastic idea! Really why would the nuclear waste have to be melted? Wouldn't spent uranium rods quickly sink? If they were dropped near the middle of a active volcanic crater, wouldn't it go down into the vent the magma is coming out of? Wouldn't it disappear from the face of the Earth, effectively, forever? In the worse case scenario, the unmelted rods are stored in the volcano where no one can recover them. I think the idea has merit. It seems mostly doom sayers who go, "It is unstable! It go Boom!", who are against this. The worst that will happen would be that the magma might g... [More]

A little off topic but has anyone considered this as a possible solution to the world's trash problem? no more landfills just throw it in a volcano. If one is concerened with the release of chemicals when the trash is dropped in could we possibly create some sort of sealed dome over a stable lave tube?

we already know how to get rid of radioactive waste without stock piling it or buring it or throwing it into a volcanoe. but if we did this the price of uranimium would drop drastically. which is why carter outlawed it, by presidental order.

You forgot ocean dumping. I hear it was very popular in the 60's - 80's... Now it's back to haunt us...

Can you imagine the toxic steam.,,. smoke and acid rain this would cause.,. the surrounding air would be unbreathable, the farming lands and the soil. You know, I can just picture the brainstorming session: Guy 1: So, what are we gonna do with all that radioactive waste? Cmon guys, think! Guy 2: We could just dump it into the ocean, nobody cares about it, right? Guy 3: Nah, then we might poison the fish, and I own 20% of a fish stick production company. Guy 1: How about we fund research into neutralizing it? Guy 2: Too expensive. Guy 3: Let's just buy some storage space in a suburb. Once people get cancer, we can just send some cash to a few dudes to find out a correlation between all these people and blame it. Like, if they all eat tortilla... [More]
