What ever. You know as well as I do it was a species of sea going hyrax. You sir are my hero!!!! But seriously maybe it is just swimming around in the water to throw investigators off its trail... Kinda like when it deliberately fake BF tracks or only shows the top half of its body to incite hysteria.

Wouldn't there be DNA on the net. A netted animal should have some sort of imprint from slime or damage done by the net itself. Very cool story-Thanks.

The continental shelf is only 20k off the coast here and I've caught some strange things in crab nets (white deep sea prawns and the like). I'll be photographing such in future. The carcass sank before Marsh could secure a sample.
